Even though you might have been judged as guilty on Yomim Nora’im (The High Holidays Rosh Hashanah through Yom Kippur) I will acquit you in the merit of the Patriarchs” thus says Our Creator to Israel.
“The other nations of the world do not have this merit of the Patriarchs to depend on if, G-d forbid, they should be found guilty. But you, a child of Israel, at the time of appearing before me in judgment, even though you are found guilty I will look upon the merit of the Patriarchs. Therefore your sentence will be acquitted. The nation of Israel said to Our Creator, “But on Rosh Hashanah we are judged?.”
Our Creator replied to them, “Come and see what it says in the Torah – ‘…The One (the first) day of the month, in the merit of Avraham…’. As it is said, “One was Avraham…’ – Yehezkel 33:24
“ ‘A remembrance of the shofar blowing of terruah…’ is in the merit of Yitzhak. And now we ask why this merit comes with the shofar blowing of Rosh Hashanah. This is a remembrance of the ram’s horn. (The ram was offered on Mount Moriah in the place of Yitzhak on Rosh HaShonah.)
“ ‘Mikrah kodesh, Call out holy’… is in the merit of Yaacov. Our Creator said to him, ‘Listen to me, Yaacov, Israel, those who call to me.’ Yishayah 48:12.” ( P’sikta Rabbati on VaYikra 23).
